Florian Wirtz was Liverpool’s first big money signing of the summer and with the German International’s hefty price tag combined with his reputation of being the one of the best young talents in the world, all eyes and pressure seemed to be on the young German talent. The 22-year-old spent his whole career in Germany before moving to English side Liverpool and his time at Bayer 04 Leverkusen will forever be remembered for his pivotal role in the club’s “Invincibles” title winning season where the German midfielder contributed 18 Goals and 19 Assists in all competitions. Overall Florian Wirtz left Bayer Leverkusen with:
- 197 Appearances
- 57 Goals
- 62 Assists
- 1 Bundesliga Title
- 1 Franz Beckenbauer Supercup (German Super Cup)
- 1 DFB-Pokal (German Cup)
Typically top performing Bundesliga players end up making moves to either Borussia Dortmund or Bayern Munich however Liverpool managed to convinced the Wirtz to take on a new challenge in a new league and let us just say that life at Anfield had been smooth sailing from the start for the young midfielder.
Early Season Struggles
On June 13th 2025 it was reported that Liverpool had agreed the deal to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer 04 Leverkusen for a complete package fee of £116m (£100m + £16m Add-Ons) and on June 20th the club announced the arrival of the 22-year-old attacking midfielder. Florian Wirtz’s pre-season was something of a mixed bag as it was clear to see that the German International was struggling to get in the rhyme of things playing in a new environment however his confidence was boosted as he managed to register a goal in Liverpool’s 3-0 victory over Japanese side Yokohama F. Marinos. Wirtz’s first official test came in the Community Shield game against Crystal Palace where the German midfielder combined with Liverpool’s other new summer signing, Hugo Ekitike, to score the opening goal of the game and register Wirtz his first official goal contribution of the season. Since then, however it had been a very long 2025 for the former Bayer Leverkusen man as Wirtz went a horrible run of not contributing a single goal or assist for his new club in his Liverpool’s opening 10 games of the season in all competitions. The early draught seemed to have come to end on October 22nd in the Champions League fixture against Eintracht Frankfurt where Florian Wirtz had a brilliant performance which saw him secure 2 assists for Liverpool’s 4th and 5th goals in their 5-1 thrashing of the German side.
Unfortunately after that big performance, Wirtz’s fortunes did not seem to change as the German continued his draught for Liverpool’s next 9 games which lead to some speculation that Florian Wirtz’s only good performance so far this season coming against a Bundesliga team was no mere coincidence. Many claimed that the 22-year-old should have stayed in the Bundesliga and joined Bayern Munich as maybe the young talent was not meant for the high intensity and physicality of the English Premier League. Liverpool manager Arne Slot however was doing his part in backing Wirtz to turn his form around as Wirtz started nearly every game for Liverpool and only started on the substitute’s bench 5 times so far this season. Slot had even gone as far as to play Wirtz in different positions such as on the left and right wings as well as the manager even tried moving some players around to play new positions, such as Dominik Szoboszlai playing at Right Back, to accommodate Wirtz in midfield. Lucky for Arne Slot, his patience and persistence looks to have finally been rewarded because as the title of this article says, “Florian Wirtz Has Finally Arrived”.
Breakout Form
On December 20th against Tottenham Hotspurs, Florian Wirtz registered his first ever Premier League assist by combining with fellow expensive summer signing Alexander Isak to score the opening goal of the game. Both players needed that moment as both Wirtz and Isak costed Liverpool around £246m in the summer with their arrivals and they have unfortunately not met anyone’s high expectations. Unfortunately for Isak, he picked up a serious injury in the aftermath of the goal and was expected to miss several months of football. Florian Wirtz however used that moment to turn his fortunes around and find the type of form that is proving to justify his huge price tag. In Liverpool’s very next game against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Wirtz registered his first ever Premier League goal for Liverpool which turned out to be the match winning goal securing the 3 points for the Reds. The German International then went on to score an equalising goal against Fulham in an incredible game that ended 2-2 and followed up that performance with a FA Cup goal and assist in Liverpool’s 4-1 victory over English League One side Barnsley. Wirtz continued his form in the Premier League once again against Burnley by scoring Liverpool’s only goal of the game in a 1-1 draw and then returned to the Champions League to score his first Champions League goal for The Reds in a 6-0 demolition of Qarabag FK. To cap off the good form, Liverpool hosted Newcastle United where Wirtz once again showed his class by registering another assist and a goal in their 4-1 dominance over the Magpies.
Wirtz Before December 20th:
- 21 Games
- 0 Goals
- 3 Assists
Wirtz After December 20th:
- 11 Games
- 6 Goals
- 3 Assists
Newfound Partnership
Something about that game against Tottenham Hotspurs on December 20th must have sparked something in Wirtz to find the confidence to go on a type of form that as virtually resurrected the young midfielder’s reputation. Fans of Liverpool have also started to notice a little partnership forming between Florian Wirtz and his fellow summer signing teammate Hugo Ekitike. As mentioned previously in the Community Shield game against Crystal Palace, Florian Wirtz registered his first official assist for the club and it was for Hugo Ekitike’s debut goal however as we know that moment did not spark the alleged partnership. During Wirtz’s current goal contributing form, Hugo Ekitike was the player who assisted the German’s first ever Premier League goal against Wolverhampton Wanderers and since then the duo has gone on to combine 5 times to register goals for Liverpool. Once against Wolves, twice against Barnsley, once against Qarabag FK and once against Newcastle United. If you add the Community Shield goal, that would make 6 goal contributions that the duo has combined for Liverpool this season and with The Reds still being in the Champions League, FA Cup and 14 Premier League games to go, there is still plenty of time for the partnership between the two summer signings to grow this season.
