After the highs of winning the UEFA Europa League at the end of the 2024/2025 season, Tottenham Hotspurs now find themselves in a far worse position than they were last season where they finished 17th in the Premier League with 11 wins, 5 draws, 22 defeats and were 13 points off the relegation zone. After the conclusion of Matchweek 27, Tottenham are currently 16th with 7 wins, 8 draws and 12 defeats with things seemingly looking like they are heading for the worst possible outcome for the North London club. This season has been one to forget for Spurs as they have been riddled with injuries, had transfers hijacked or blocked, disciplinary issues with certain players and most recently the sacking of their Head Coach Thomas Frank.
Positive Start to the Season
Despite Tottenham Hotspurs losing their captain Son Heung-Min to Major Soccer League, Yves Bissouma’s alleged disciplinary issues, having their signings of Morgan Gibbs-White and Eberechi Eze blocked and hijacked respectively, and the defeat in the UEFA Super Cup final against Paris Saint-Germain, Tottenham were off to a decent start to their 2025/2026 campaign. Spurs won their opening 2 games of the season against newly promoted Burnley and Manchester City before suffering a surprising 1-0 defeat at home to AFC Bournemouth. Following that minor setback Thomas Frank’s side then went on a 7-game unbeaten run in all competitions with 4 wins and 3 draws which also put Spurs firmly in the title race early on in the season with the North London club positioned in 3rd place in the Premier League with 14 points out of a possible 21. As previously mentioned Tottenham’s unbeaten run did include other competitions such as the EFL Cup, where they defeated Doncaster Rovers, and in the UEFA Champions League where they defeated Villareal CF as well as secured a point against FK Bodø/Glimt. After the unbeaten run is where things started to take a slow but steady decline for the North London club however surprisingly not in the Champions League.
UEFA Champions League Top 4 Finish
After Tottenham Hotspur’s 7 game unbeaten run, came an even longer run of bad performances as well as bad results in the Premier League and domestic cup competitions however the UEFA Champions League is the one competition where Tottenham seem to be at their best.
Games – 8
Wins – 5
Draws – 2
Defeats – 1
Goals Scored – 17
Goals Conceded – 7
Clean Sheets – 6
Points Accumulated – 17 out of a possible 24
Tottenham’s stellar Champions League run included victories over Borussia Dortmund, FC København, Slavia Prague, Eintracht Frankfurt and the previously mentioned Villareal CF while their only defeat in the entire competition came against the current champions Paris Saint-Germain. Spurs finishing the league phase in 4th position is not something many people would have expected and is the only good thing to come out of Tottenham’s season so far as they gained automatic entry to the Champions League Round of 16 stage. This good fortune in one competition however does not overshadow the overall haunting season Tottenham have been experiencing which has led to the sacking of their Head Coach Thomas Frank in February of this year.
Thomas Frank Sacking
As stated many times already, the aftermath of Tottenham Hotspur’s 7 game unbeaten run led to an unfortunate run of form which has led to the club’s current relegation battle. Spurs lost to Aston Villa at home in the league which kick started Tottenham’s rollercoaster form of winning games sparingly and then suffering quite a number of defeats directly after. Spurs would have a dominate 3-0 Premier League victory over Everton and then would immediately follow that up with a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United which knocked them out of the EFL Cup. The trend would continue with Tottenham losing to Chelsea 1-0 in the Premier League and then go on to the Champions League to defeat FC København in a 4-0 thrashing only to follow that up with a 2-2 draw against Manchester United, a team they had beaten in their last 4 meetings. The confusion continued with Tottenham going on a 3-game losing streak by suffering defeats to Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain and Fulham only to follow that up with a 3 game unbeaten run of 1 draw against Newcastle United and 2 victories over Brentford and Slavia Prague.
This on again off again form continued until it inevitably led Tottenham to their current situation where reality set in that Spurs were potentially in the relegation battle this season and the final straw for Thomas Frank came with another defeat to Newcastle United which prompted the Tottenham Hotspur higher ups to make a decision on the Norwegian manager’s future which was unfortunately to sack him. This decision did not solve all of Tottenham’s problems as the club still has its long list of injuries as well as the new Interim Head Coach, Igor Tudor, suffered an embarrassing 4-1 defeat in the most recent North London Derby against rivals Arsenal. With Tottenham also being knocked out of the FA Cup back in January of this year, the only hope now for Tottenham and their season now is to survive and prevent the humiliation of relegation with 11 Premier League games remaining as well as see how far they can go in the UEFA Champions League this season.
