Wolverhampton Wanderers for majority of this season were seen as the “whipping boys”, as in the team that every other Premier League team is excited to play against because they are seen as an easy 3 points game. By the end of 2025, Wolves were rock bottom of the Premier League table with 3 points after 19 games and not accumulating a single win in that time. Most fans had written off Wolves’ season and had even named them the first team to be relegated this season as Wolves were the only team in the league to have not reached double figure points for the season as well as they were following in the footsteps of a few previous teams that had their worst starts to a Premier League campaign and went on to be relegated. However, as of recently Wolves may go on to do the unthinkable after their string of recent good results has brought some positivity and optimism amongst Wolves fans.

Record Losses and Worst Start

The start to the 2025/2026 season was a miserable one for Wolverhampton Wanderers fans as the season first started with Wolves letting go of a lot of their top players in the Summer Transfer Window that included names such as Mattheus Cunha, Rayan Aït-Nouri and Fabio Silva just to name a few. Without much recruitment to replace these players, Wolves did not look ready for the upcoming season and the results proved that with Wolves losing their opening 5 league games of the season. Scoring 3 goals and conceding 12, things were already looking very bleak for The Wanderers however there were positives outside the Premier League with Wolves winning both their EFL Cup games against fellow Premier League opposition in West Ham United and Everton. Those positives started to translate into the Premier League with Wolves picking up back-to-back draws in the league against Tottenham Hotspurs and Brighton & Hove Albion however that brief turnover of bad fortunes was only temporary as Wolves were about to go on a club record breaking run.

Wolverhampton Wanderers went on an 11-game losing streak in Premier League with the Wanderers conceding 25 goals and only managing to score 5 goals with Wolves failing to score a goal in 7 of their 11 defeats. They were also knocked out of the EFL Cup by Chelsea in a 4-3 defeat which adds a 12th defeat to their 11 in the Premier league and totals the goals conceded to 29 as well as slightly increases their goals scored to 8. Wolves thankfully ended their losing streak by securing a point in their 1-1 draw against Manchester United which meant they finished 2025 with 3 points and rock bottom of the Premier League table:

  • Games – 19
  • Wins – 0
  • Draws – 3
  • Defeats – 16
  • Goals Scored – 11
  • Goals Conceded – 40
  • Goal Difference – (-29)

Rob Edwards’ Turn Around

Around early November 2025, Wolverhampton Wanderers appointed former Wolves defender Rod Edwards as the new Head Coach following the sacking of Vitor Pereira. Rob Edwards left Middlesborough, who are 2nd the English Championship, to help Wolves do the unthinkable and escape relegation. Edwards was unfortunately apart of Wolves’ very lengthy losing streak with the Welsh Head Coach being involved in 7 of the 11 defeats in the Premier League however Rob Edwards did manage to end Wolves’ bad run with the previously mentioned draw to Manchester United and then proceeded to follow that up with the club’s first Premier League victory of the season against West Ham United in a 3-0 showing. The Wanderers once again went on a brief streak of not losing games with 2 draws in the league against Everton and Newcastle United while having an incredible first FA Cup game of the season by defeating Shrewsbury Town 6-1.

Things went back to “normal” however with Wolves then going on a 3-game losing streak against teams such as Manchester City, AFC Bournemouth and Chelsea before once again picking points in draws against Nottingham Forest and surprisingly Arsenal. The game against the league leaders Arsenal stood out the most as Wolves were 2-0 down in the 2nd half of the game and managed to score 2 late goals to walk away with a well-deserved point. Despite a minor setback in their last minute defeat to Crystal Palace, Rob Edwards managed to secure back-to-back wins for the club for the first time this season against then 3rd place Aston Villa and astonishingly Liverpool. Liverpool may have gotten their revenge in the FA Cup fixture where they knocked out Wolves in a 3-1 victory however that could only work to serve Edwards and his team as now their primary focus is solely the Premier League and they will now have a less busy fixture list.

The Great Escape?

Wolverhampton Wanderers are currently still 20th in the Premier League table with 16 points and a -30 goal difference however all is not lost as because of their recent run of good form as well as the poor form of fellow league strugglers, Wolves are now:

  • 3 points behind 19th place Burnley
  • 12 points behind 18th place West Ham United and 17th Place Nottingham Forest
  • 13 points behind 16th place Tottenham Hotspur
  • 15 points behind 15th place Leeds United

Wolves’ win over Liverpool was their 30th game of the season, meaning that they have only 8 games left to try and secure as many points as possible with 24 points being made available to escape relegation. The previously mentioned clubs above Wolves still have to play their 30th respective games of the season however the good news for Wolves fans is that those teams are currently on their own respective winless runs in the league with West Ham United being the only exception due to their recent 1-0 victory over Fulham. Mathematically it is still very possible for Wolves to climb up the table and make the great escape however it is very much down to the teams above them to continue their bad run of form as well as Rob Edwards and his team to continue their good run of league form.
