Gianluigi Donnarumma, the Italian goalkeeper who was in goal for Paris Saint-Germain during all 4 of their major trophy wins last season, has seemingly and quite surprisingly been excluded from PSG’s plans going forward this season. The 26-year-old joined PSG in 2021 as part of PSG’s big blockbuster signings that included the likes of Achraf Hakimi, Georginio Wijnaldum, Sergio Ramos and of course Lionel Messi. Since then, Donnarumma has gone on to make 161 appearances and secured 56 clean sheets for the club in all competitions. It is safe to say that the Italian international has become an integral part of PSG’s team and after completing the quadruple with the club, Donnarumma has gone on to be considered one of the best goalkeepers in the world which further makes this whole situation even more surprising that Donnarumma has 1 year left on his contract with PSG and the French giants are looking to move on from him rather than extend his contract.

On June 10, 2025, Fabrizio Romano reported Donnarumma saying, “My priority is to stay at Paris Saint-Germain and sign new deal”. And also added that, “I don’t think there will be any issue or problem.” From these quotes, it is clear to see that Donnarumma was confident that he would be a PSG player this season and for the future however almost a month had passed and both the player and the club could not come to an agreement on a new contract. According to Donnarumma’s agent, Enzo Raiola, “PSG made requests different from the standard contract.” Reports claims that the former AC Milan goalkeeper had been offered a deal worth around €8m per year which is quite a significant drop from the €11.5m per year Donnarumma is currently earning. The goalkeeper is said to have accepted the pay cut deal to extend his stay but PSG allegedly changed the conditions of the deal once more which caused the breakdown between the club and player. “Gigio even accepted reduced conditions; he was happy to be here, and the results came.” “When we decided to move forward, the terms suddenly changed, and we stopped everything.” “What happened in the last few days is unexpected, a huge lack of respect.” -  Enzo Raiola reported by Sky Sport

The situation became irreparable after it was confirmed that club manager, Luis Enrique, had dropped Donnarumma from the team that was set to face Tottenham Hotspurs in the UEFA Super Cup final following the arrival of new goalkeeper signing Lucas Chevalier from Lille for €40 million. The new French goalkeeper was set to become PSG’s new first choice in goal, as Luis Enrique has stated that he wanted a “different kind of goalkeeper” and the PSG manager has also taken all the blame and accountability for the fallout with Donnarumma and his camp. “These are always difficult decisions to make. I can only say very good things about Gianluigi Donnarumma. He is one of the best players in his position without any doubt. He is an even better person, but we're looking for a different profile of goalkeeper. It's always difficult to decide these sorts of situations.” – Luis Enrique in the Pre-match press conference for the UEFA Super Cup.

On August 12, 2025 Donnarumma released a statement saying goodbye to the PSG fans and expressed his disappointment and heartbreak following the disrespect he has shown by the club and manager, while his agent Raiola had his own statement saying that he is speaking with legal team to see what actions they should take next. “What happened in the last few days is unexpected, a huge lack of respect.” “The coach works for the club; we’ll see, with our lawyers, what position they’ve taken.” - Enzo Raiola reported by Sky Sport. Gianluigi Donnarumma looks set to leave PSG this summer and the goalkeeper seems to have his eyes firmly set on joining the Premier League with both Manchester City and Manchester United showing interest in the prospect of signing one of the best goalkeepers in the world. It is reported that PSG are requesting around €50 for the quadruple winner however, that price valuation may seem a bit too high considering the player’s earlier mentioned wages of around €11.5m per year. Manchester City’s approach is based on whether they can offload their current first-choice goalkeeper Éderson, who is reportedly in talks with Galatasaray over a potential move. Manchester United are primarily focused on outgoings as well as trying to find solutions for the possibility to sign young Cameroon midfielder Carlos Baleba from Brighton & Hove Albion, who are not looking to sell however, the player himself is open to the potential move.

One thing that is for certain is that the relationship between PSG and Donnarumma is broken and the goalkeeper will not be a PSG player come the end of this transfer window. Whether he joins the Premier League or not this season is yet to be seen.

🔴 Latest Developments – August 31, 2025

Since the initial fallout, PSG’s stance has shifted. The French champions, who were originally holding out for around €50 million, are now prepared to accept a fee in the region of €30–35 million to ensure Donnarumma’s departure before the transfer window closes.

Manchester City remain the frontrunners, but their move hinges on Éderson completing a proposed transfer to Galatasaray. City’s opening bid of €15 million fell well short of PSG’s valuation, though negotiations are ongoing.

At least one other Premier League side is in active talks with Donnarumma’s camp, with Manchester United and Chelsea both linked in recent days.

The player is understood to favour a move to City, but sources close to him insist his priority is regular first‑team football in England, regardless of the club.

With the deadline looming, PSG are open to flexible deal structures — including a loan with an option to buy — to avoid losing the goalkeeper for free next summer. The next 72 hours could be decisive in determining where Donnarumma’s next chapter begins.
