After a 5-goal thriller in the most recent Reds derby, Manchester United have officially qualified for the UEFA Champions League competition for the 2026/2027 season. Man Utd are currently 3rd in the Premier league with 64 points with 3 games left of the season which is quite remarkable considering the struggles the club was going through under Ruben Amorim in the beginning of the season.
Struggles under Amorim
Ruben Amorim took over at Manchester United in November 2024 and lead the club to their worst ever league finish in the Premier League era in 15th place. The Red Devils even lost a Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspurs which all but confirmed their worst ever season with no trophies to paper over the visible cracks at the club. Amorim famously promised the United fanbase that the “good days” were coming implying that the 2025/2026 season would be a much better campaign for the club and even though the former Portuguese head coach was correct, he was not correct in the sense that the “good days” would come with him in charge. The first half of the season was one of a rollercoaster for Man Utd as even though they brought in 3 new top attackers as well as a young new goalkeeper, the results were not meeting expectations as Man Utd could only manage 8 wins in their first 20 Premier League games of the season.
United also suffered a surprise early exit from the EFL Cup by losing on penalties to 4th Division English side Grimsby Town, this combined with their humbling defeats to Arsenal, Manchester City, Brentford, Aston Villa and a 10-man Everton side did not fill many United fans with belief that the “good days” were in fact coming. United’s longest win streak in those 20 games was 3 wins in a row which is quite shocking when you remember that they managed only 8 wins in those 20 league games. By January 2026, in Amorim’s final game in charge, United were 6th in the league with 31 points which put them in prime position to still make top 4 however their position was very fragile as well as they were only 4 points above 14th place. With 8 wins, 7 draws and 5 defeats, there was not much optimism for United to finish in a UEFA Champions League qualifying position until Amorim’s infamous post-match press conference which led to his departure and Michael Carrick’s interim appointment.
New lease on life under Michael Carrick
Michael Carrick was appointed as Manchester United’s interim head coach until the end of the season and the club legend got immediately to work changing everything at United that Ruben Amorim had been working on. It was very well known that Ruben Amorim played with 3-4-3 system that he was known for as well as often criticised for as the system never seemed to click with his players and the Portuguese coach always defended his system claiming that the players’ “mentality” was the real issue. That argument seems to fall flat now as, mentioned previously, Michael Carrick took over at United and changed the club’s entire playing system back to a familiar 4-2-3-1 formation which immediately bore fruit as United started playing with a confidence as well as a type of freedom that was missing from their performances since Amorim’s appointment. Carrick was not given an easy start to life at United as the former Middlesborough manager had to take over United from caretaker head coach, Darren Fletcher, who had managed 1 league draw and an FA Cup early exit defeat before Carrick’s appointment as well as Carrick’s first 5 games in charge included fixtures against Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.
Michael Carrick defied all expectations as the interim head coach as in his first 14 games in charge United:
- 10 Wins
- 2 Draws
- 2 Defeats
- 21 Goals Scored
- 14 Goals Conceded
- 4 Clean Sheets
- 32 points out of a possible 42
Michael Carrick within 4 months completely transformed Manchester United and with not much objectives to achieve other than European qualification, Carrick has smashed it out of the park with a team that many claimed, including Ruben Amorim, to be not “not good enough’ to qualify for the UEFA Champions League. Not only did Carrick manage Champions League qualification with 3 games of the season left to spare, the former Champions Leaguer winner did it by also defeating everyone of Man Utd’s big 6 rivals which include Man City, Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea and Liverpool.
Plans for next season?
With Champions league qualification secured, Michael Carrick has done all he can to audition himself for the role of permanent Manchester United head coach while many reports claim that Carrick is the frontrunner for the job after the exceptional work he had done for Man Utd this season. Along with deciding on a new permanent head coach, Man Utd can now make concrete decisions on possible new signings for next season. According to reports from TheAthleticFC, Man Utd are set to make at least 4 major signings for the 2026/2027 season with 3 areas in mind which include the midfield, a striker and a left back. Reports also go on to say that United may also be in the market for another left footed centre back as some members of the club feel that United do not have enough depth in their defence especially with certain defenders picking up either frequent or long-term injuries in United’s least busy schedule season in their recent history.
Reports from Fabrizio Romano claim that United may also be potentially in the market for a left winger as well as a few months back even Michael Carrick himself had said in a press conference that United have discussed the possibility of signing a new winger so that is also important to note. With all that being said, the expectation is that United will have a big 2026 summer transfer window where a lot of big signings will be made in anticipation for European football and we are also expected to see a few big names out the door for United.
