On March 24, 2026 Mohamed Salah posted a 2 minute on his socials announcing that he will be leaving Liverpool at the end of this season despite signing a contract in April of 2025 that was set to expire in 2027. Reports claim that Salah and Liverpool have made an agreement to mutually terminate his contract at the end of the season, allowing the Egyptian winger to leave the club on a free this summer. This news is quite a turn of events considering not long-ago reports said that Mo Salah and manager Arne Slot had repaired their relationship.

New Contract and Seemingly Broken Relationship

2024/2025 was a Ballon D’or worthy season for Mohamed Salah which saw Liverpool lift their 2nd ever Premier League title and their 20th overall English championship with the help of his monumental contributions:

  • Games – 38
  • Goals – 29
  • Assists – 18
  • Minutes Played – 3,377’
  • Average Minutes per Game – 89
  • Big Chances Created – 46

If you include all his contributions in other competitions, Mo Salah had 57 goal contributions in 1 singular season which is unreal to say the least. After such an incredible season, the Liverpool number 11 was expected to leave the club on a free transfer with the Egyptian international being 32-years-old at the time as well as his contract with the club nearing its expiration. Surprisingly The Reds and the Egyptian winger came to an agreement on a 2-year deal, extending Salah’s stay as a Liverpool player which in hindsight may have been a mistake given what occurred in December 2025.

Liverpool after having a brilliant start to the 2025/2026 season fell into a long streak of bad form where they only had 3 wins in 12 games in all competitions. Liverpool manager Arne Slot then benched Mo Salah for 3 straight games and only used him as a substitute in 1 of those games. This random decision to drop Salah ahead of the AFCON competition drove the Liverpool legend to do a passionate impromptu interview where the winger shared his frustrations with his treatment. He felt as though he was being made a scapegoat for Liverpool’s struggles this season as well as he felt his relationship with the manager had just suddenly deteriorated. The 2 had seemingly mended their relationship before Salah had left AFCON and things seemed to be back to normal even when he returned from the tournament. Mohamed Salah may not be having one of his best seasons as Liverpool a player however that does not take way his status Liverpool legend.

Liverpool Legend

On June 22nd 2017, Liverpool announced the arrival of Mohamed Salah from AS Roma for a fee of around £34.3m which at the time was a big fee for a 25-year-old winger who was seen as a “Chelsea Reject” and almost nobody could have predicted how big of signing this deal was as well as how much of a bargain price it was. After 9 seasons playing for The Reds as well as still having some games to play this seaason, Mo Salah’s numbers for the club look like this:

  • Games – 435
  • Goals – 255
  • Assists – 122
  • Minutes played – 35,363'

Club Achievements:

  • 2x Premier League Champions
  • 2x English League Cup Winners
  • 1x English FA Cup Winner
  • 1x UEFA Champions League Winner
  • 1x English Community Shield Winner
  • 1x UEFA Super Cup Winner
  • 1x FIFA Club World Cup Winner

Individual Awards:

  • 3x Liverpool Footballer of the Year
  • 1x Player of the Year
  • 2x Premier League Player of the Season
  • 1x PFA Player’s Player of the Year
  • 4x Premier League Golden Boot
  • 2x African Footballer of the Year
  • 2x FIFA Men’s Best Player
  • 2018 Puskas Award

And these do not even scratch the surface of all the Player of the Match awards, Player of the Month awards, Goal of the Month awards as well as plenty of other awards and individual records. There should be no doubt in anybody’s that Mohamed Salah is a club legend as well as a Premier League legend.

Where next for Mo Salah?

Nobody knows what is next for the Liverpool legend and not even the player himself knows however he does have plenty of options available. Many times in the past Salah has been linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League which is a common destination these days for players in their 30s as well as playing in the MLS alongside footballing legends enjoying their football while they near retirement. A return to the Serie A could also still be on the cards for Salah as the Italian league is no stranger to hosting players in their 30s, teams like Inter and AC Milan still have veteran players in their ranks who are still the first names in the starting XI team sheets. The Summer of 2026 will be very interesting to see where the Egyptian international will see out the rest of his footballing career.
