Not too long ago, Mohamed Salah made the announcement that he would be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season despite having 1 more year left on his current contract. Now as most recently as the 9th April 2026, club legend Andy Roberston was announced to be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season with the Scottish left back’s contract due to expire at the end of this current campaign. After nearly a decade at the club, Andy Robertson who has been a long-time servant to the club will be leaving Liverpool on a free and the decorated fullback may have already found a new club for the future ahead of his departure announcement from The Reds.

Robertson’s arrival from Hull City

The then 23-year-old fullback signed for Liverpool from newly relegated Hull City for an astonishingly low fee of £10m (£8m + £2m Add-ons) in 2017. Hull City ended the 2016/2017 campaign with an 18th place finish however Andy Roberston was one of the consistent standouts for The Tigers during that difficult return season to the Premier League so it was no surprise the young fullback was picked up by a top flight English team. The real surprise in hindsight is looking back at the fee considering the successful career the now 32-year-old has achieved and Liverpool could probably be thankful for Hull City’s relegation because that 100% played a huge role in The Reds signing their future club legend for cheap.

Years of Success

Since his arrival, Robertson has gone on to be a pivotal player in Liverpool’s success over the past 9 years and has been the conversation with other Premier League legends as being one of the best left-backs in Premier League history. It was not just his defensive abilities that stood out to fans and pundits but it was his attacking threat going forward which elevated Liverpool’s goal threat under Jurgen Klopp’s reign at the club. Robertson alongside his fullback duo, Trent Alexander-Arnold, were seen as the best fullback partnership in the league with their open play crosses, ball distribution and set piece routines which lead to plenty of goals for Liverpool in the Jurgen Klopp era.

Blocked Move to Tottenham

Following Jurgen Klopp’s departure, Liverpool appointed Arne Slot as his successor and The Reds went on to win their 2nd ever Premier League title in his first season in charge. Despite the success, Slot and Liverpool were in the market for a much younger long term left back for the future in the 2025 summer transfer window as The Reds were in talks with AFC Bournemouth over a potential move for rising star Milos Kerkez and this approach did spark interest from other clubs for Robertson to leave Liverpool considering he is in his 30s as well as he is on his final year of his contract. Atlético Madrid were initially keen on signing the then 31-year-old however Liverpool wanted to keep Robertson as an experienced option despite the arrival of Milos Kerkez. Robertson essentially became a backup option to the new left back signing which led to talks in January of this year that Tottenham were interested in signing the Scottish fullback however Liverpool opted to blocked the move as they were unable to find a proper replacement for the club legend. Konstantinos Tsimikas, who is currently on loan at AS Roma, was considered an option to recall however Roma were reluctant to see the Greek fullback being recalled midway through the season.

Move to Tottenham back on?

Despite staying past the January Transfer Window, Andy Robertson did announce that he will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season as mentioned previously already. The big news following Robertson’s departure announcement was the reports that Andy Robertson has already made a verbal agreement to join Tottenham Hotspur at the end of the season. Nothing has been officially signed or taken formal steps yet as Andy Robertson’s decision to join The Lilywhites is heavily dependant on their club’s Premier League status. In other words, Andy Roberston will join Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer in June 2026 only if the North London club can avoid relegation this season. Should Tottenham drop down to the English Championship, Robertson will assess his other options as the 32-year-old fullback still has interest from other clubs in Europe so the ball is in fact in Tottenham’s court.
